It is characterized by low cost and low power consumption.<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Alternator<\/strong>: A generator installed in vehicles that has the role of converting engine rotation into electrical energy.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a general alternator, the output voltage is adjusted according to the engine&#8217;s rotation, but types that allow control via LIN communication enable more detailed settings.<\/p>\r\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Materials Used<\/h2>\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The materials used in this project are as follows:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>LIN-compatible alternator (Used: Taken from a Mazda Carol DBA-HB36S that I impulse-bought 5 years ago)<\/li>\r\n<li>Standard road bike<\/li>\r\n<li>12V-5Ah Sealed Lead-Acid Battery<\/li>\r\n<li>Voltmeter, switches (for monitoring and controlling power generation)<\/li>\r\n<li>Case created with a 3D printer<\/li>\r\n<li>Copper-clad laminate board processed with a CNC machine<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Work Procedure<\/h2>\r\n<ol>\r\n<li>\r\n<p><strong>Checking the Alternator&#8217;s Operation<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p>The alternator used this time was a used unit, and the model number of the built-in regulator IC could not be identified even after disassembly. Therefore, for this test, I referred to the &#8220;standalone mode&#8221; described in the datasheet of a different regulator IC for LIN-compatible alternators, rather than the datasheet for this specific alternator.<\/p>\r\n<p>In standalone mode, LIN communication is not required, and the specification is to start generating power at a certain RPM or higher. However, during the operation check, no matter how much I spun the alternator, it only generated a few volts, which couldn&#8217;t be considered actual power generation. Normally, when installed in a vehicle, it is connected to a 12V battery. So, I tried spinning it while connected to a battery, but power generation still did not start.<\/p>\r\n<p>As a trial, I tried connecting the 12V battery while the alternator was spinning at about 2,000 RPM, and finally, power generation began. From this, I realized that a certain initial rotation speed is necessary for the alternator to start generating electricity.<\/p>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<li>\r\n<p><strong>Connecting the Bicycle and Alternator<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Connected the rear wheel of the bicycle to the alternator.<\/li>\r\n<li>Carefully adjusted the mounting position to ensure the alternator would not wobble.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<li>\r\n<p><strong>Power Generation Experiment<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Actually pedaled the bike to spin the alternator and measured the amount of power generated.<\/li>\r\n<li>Used a voltmeter to confirm that the battery was being charged correctly.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<!-- \/wp:post-content -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:separator --><hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/><!-- \/wp:separator -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:heading {\"level\":4} -->\r\n<div class=\"flex-shrink-0 flex flex-col relative items-end\">\r\n<div>\r\n<div class=\"pt-0\">\r\n<div class=\"gizmo-bot-avatar flex h-8 w-8 items-center justify-center overflow-hidden rounded-full\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit; font-size: 24px; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit;\">Experimental Results and Challenges<\/span><\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"group\/conversation-turn relative flex w-full min-w-0 flex-col agent-turn\">\r\n<div class=\"flex-col gap-1 md:gap-3\">\r\n<div class=\"flex max-w-full flex-col flex-grow\">\r\n<div class=\"min-h-8 text-message flex w-full flex-col items-end gap-2 whitespace-normal break-words [.text-message+&amp;]:mt-5\" dir=\"auto\" data-message-author-role=\"assistant\" data-message-id=\"6cc16ee8-dade-4e41-ad8f-8134c4ac7003\" data-message-model-slug=\"gpt-4o\">\r\n<div class=\"flex w-full flex-col gap-1 empty:hidden first:pt-[3px]\">\r\n<div class=\"markdown prose w-full break-words dark:prose-invert dark\">\r\n<p><strong>Results<\/strong>:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Stable power generation is possible just by pedaling the bicycle.<\/li>\r\n<li>With a power output of about 30W, it is suitable for charging smartphones or powering LED lights.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><strong>Challenges<\/strong>:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>If the initial RPM is insufficient, power generation will not start, so the startup procedure for the entire system needs to be refined.<\/li>\r\n<li>If the RPM is low, power generation efficiency deteriorates, so it is necessary to maintain the bicycle&#8217;s speed above a certain level.<\/li>\r\n<li>Lead-acid batteries are somewhat troublesome to handle and dispose of.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><!-- \/wp:heading --><\/ul>\r\n<!-- \/wp:list -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:separator --><hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/><!-- \/wp:separator -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:heading {\"level\":4} -->\r\n<h2>Future Improvement Plans<\/h2>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li><strong>Improving Efficiency<\/strong>: I aim for more efficient energy transmission by further refining the connection method between the alternator and the bicycle.<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Lightweighting and Space-saving<\/strong>: I want to increase the convenience of portability and installation by reviewing the structure.<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Expanding Applications<\/strong>: I aim for a system capable of storing generated electricity to run small appliances or other applications.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><!-- \/wp:list-item --><\/ul>\r\n<p><!-- \/wp:list -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:separator --><\/p>\r\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\r\n<p><!-- \/wp:separator -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:heading {\"level\":4} --><\/p>\r\n<h2>Closing Thoughts<\/h2>\r\n<p>Creating &#8220;Bicycle Power Generation with a LIN-only Alternator&#8221; was a very interesting experience as a project to enjoy the fusion of DIY and technology!<br \/>The content this time is at the prototype stage, and there is still much room for further development.
