For my first time growing blueberries, I bought a \u201cBlue Shower\u201d (Rabbiteye variety)<\/strong> sapling. My expectations were high, but after growing it casually\u2026 not a single fruit grew even after a year<\/strong>. Why…<\/span><\/p>\n

Discovered the \u201cSecret to Better Fruiting\u201d!<\/h2>\n

While researching online, I found information stating that \u201cblueberries require a different variety.\u201d A friend of mine also harvests plenty of fruit, so I figured I\u2019d give it a try!<\/span><\/p>\n

Failed by \u201cJust Adding Another Random One\u201d<\/h2>\n

I bought a sapling that caught my eye, \u201cCoville\u201d (Northern Highbush variety)<\/strong>, bringing my setup to two plants. But even though they bloomed\u2026 no fruit grew at all<\/strong>!<\/span>
What I learned after looking into it later was…<\/p>\n

The Blueberry Group\/Strain is Crucial!<\/h2>\n
    \n
  • Blue Shower<\/strong> \u2192 Rabbiteye group<\/li>\n
  • Coville<\/strong> \u2192 Northern Highbush group<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    In other words, different groups mean a combination that basically cannot cross-pollinate<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Reinforcing with the Right Pairs!<\/h2>\n

    After re-researching, I selected a well-matched pair:<\/p>\n

    • Blue Shower (Rabbiteye)<\/strong> \u2192 Partnered with \u201cFestival\u201d (same Rabbiteye group)<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Coville (Northern HB)<\/strong> \u2192 Partnered with \u201cDuke\u201d (same Northern Highbush group)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Both are \u201csame group, different varieties\u201d with matching blooming seasons. Now I’m finally back on the right track!<\/span><\/p>\n

      Particular About Soil and Pots Too!<\/h2>\n

      This year, I’m focusing on the soil as well! Inspired by the YouTube channel \u201cEngei Nouka Ishizuki Channel,\u201d I started container gardening<\/strong> using a Kanuma soil : peat moss = 1:1 mixture<\/strong>.<\/span>
      The balance of acidity, water retention, and breathability is perfect for blooming around the Golden Week period<\/span>.<\/p>\n

      Introducing Automated Watering & Evening Timer<\/h2>\n

      Watering is left to the automatic watering system<\/strong>. After observing the saplings and doing some research, I changed the setting to evening watering, which is less prone to causing disease than in the morning<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n
