The extracted vector data has the excellent property of not degrading even when scaled up or down on screen, but to put it to practical use in actual crafting, it must be translated into physical tools. Especially in handmade work where materials like cloth, leather, or thick paper are cut into specific shapes, the presence of a &#8220;pattern (jig)&#8221; with precise outer contours is an extremely crucial factor that determines both the perfection of the work and work efficiency.<\/p>\n<h2>The Role of High-Precision Cutting Jigs Made with a 3D Printer<\/h2>\n<p>The objective of this process is to establish a reliable workflow for importing 2D SVG data\u2014whether acquired or created\u2014into 3D CAD software and converting it into solid data that can be output by a 3D printer. While the typical use of a 3D printer is modeling complex three-dimensional objects, we intentionally define the output as a &#8220;plate with a certain thickness and precise flat geometry&#8221; to serve as a sturdy cutting guide that scissors, utility knives, and chalk pencils can follow without slipping. This completely eliminates dimensional distortions that tend to occur during manual pattern making and shape changes caused by the wear of paper patterns.<\/p>\n<h2>Errors in Converting from 2D to 3D and the Importance of Continuous Single-Stroke Paths<\/h2>\n<p>When importing 2D vector data into 3D CAD and solidifying it (extruding), many users face the issue where &#8220;the import succeeds, but the command to add thickness results in an error.&#8221; The biggest challenge lies in the internal structure of the SVG data. For 3D CAD software to recognize a plane as a &#8220;Face&#8221; and calculate the addition of thickness, an absolute prerequisite is that the path is completely closed (a single-stroke state where the start and end points match). If a line is interrupted midway or unintended intersections occur internally, CAD cannot distinguish between the inside and outside, and will reject the solidification process.<\/p>\n<h2>SVG Import and Solidification Procedure Using FreeCAD 1.1<\/h2>\n<p>This procedure assumes a FreeCAD version 1.1 environment. First, launch FreeCAD, create a new project, and select &#8220;Import&#8221; from the &#8220;File&#8221; menu. Make sure to specify &#8220;SVG as geometry (Draft)&#8221; in the file format options. Since leaving it in the initial data structure tends to cause errors, switch the workbench to &#8220;Draft&#8221;, and select &#8220;Draft to Sketch&#8221; from the &#8220;Modification&#8221; menu. This converts the data into a format that can be handled by the Sketcher workbench, significantly reducing the risk of data corruption. When the dialog appears, set the type to &#8220;Dimension&#8221;, enter the target value of &#8220;2.00 mm&#8221; for the length, and click &#8220;OK&#8221;. Our goal was to create accurate resin jigs and complete 2 mm thick mold frame data that chalk pencils can easily follow. To address the issue of paths often failing to be recognized as faces during import, we provided a solution involving enforcing single-stroke paths, converting from the Draft workbench to sketches, and further registering them into bodies in PartDesign for extrusion.
