For my first time growing blueberries, I bought a “Blue Shower” (Rabbiteye variety) sapling. My expectations were high, but after growing it casually… not a single fruit grew even after a year. Why…
Discovered the “Secret to Better Fruiting”!
While researching online, I found information stating that “blueberries require a different variety.” A friend of mine also harvests plenty of fruit, so I figured I’d give it a try!
Failed by “Just Adding Another Random One”
I bought a sapling that caught my eye, “Coville” (Northern Highbush variety), bringing my setup to two plants. But even though they bloomed… no fruit grew at all!
What I learned after looking into it later was…
The Blueberry Group/Strain is Crucial!
- Blue Shower → Rabbiteye group
- Coville → Northern Highbush group
In other words, different groups mean a combination that basically cannot cross-pollinate.
Reinforcing with the Right Pairs!
After re-researching, I selected a well-matched pair:
- Blue Shower (Rabbiteye) → Partnered with “Festival” (same Rabbiteye group)
- Coville (Northern HB) → Partnered with “Duke” (same Northern Highbush group)
Both are “same group, different varieties” with matching blooming seasons. Now I’m finally back on the right track!
Particular About Soil and Pots Too!
This year, I’m focusing on the soil as well! Inspired by the YouTube channel “Engei Nouka Ishizuki Channel,” I started container gardening using a Kanuma soil : peat moss = 1:1 mixture.
The balance of acidity, water retention, and breathability is perfect for blooming around the Golden Week period.
Introducing Automated Watering & Evening Timer
Watering is left to the automatic watering system. After observing the saplings and doing some research, I changed the setting to evening watering, which is less prone to causing disease than in the morning.

- Blue Shower × Festival (Rabbiteye group)
- Coville × Duke (Northern HB group)
- Pot & Soil: Kanuma soil + peat moss 1:1, excellent breathability
- Water management: Evening irrigation via automatic timer
With these conditions in place, next year the fruit will surely grow in abundance! I plan to keep updating the blog with progress observations and harvest reports. Look forward to it!
