Hitachi Front-Loading Washing Machine BD-SX120HL — Drying Performance Restored Through Disassembly and Cleaning After Clogged Drying Filter Recurs
In our household, we use the Hitachi front-loading washer-dryer BD-SX120HL (released in mid-September 2022).
Recently, we’ve been experiencing a recurring issue where clothes remain slightly damp even after the drying cycle finishes, and the drying time has also become longer.
In fact, for this model, a recall for the BD-STX120H/BD-SX120H/BD-SV120H was issued on June 12, 2024, and our unit’s drying filter was replaced with a new one at that time.
Therefore, when I noticed this poor drying performance, the very first thing that came to my mind was:
“Has the drying filter clogged again?"
That was the single thought on my mind.
For washer-dryers, the condition of the drying filter is directly linked to performance.
Even though it was replaced due to the recall, dirt naturally accumulates with continued use.
Removing and Cleaning the Drying Filter
The task this time was very straightforward.
- Disassemble and remove the drying filter unit
- Completely remove the lint stuck deep inside
- Reassemble it as it was and check if the drying performance is restored
Convinced that it was a filter clog rather than a complex failure,
I didn’t chase unnecessary possibilities and focused first on cleaning the filter.
Sure Enough, the Cause Was a “Clogged Drying Filter"
When I disassembled it and took out the filter, the expected sight unfolded before me.
- Damp lint was packed tightly deep inside where regular cleaning cannot reach
- Fine dust remained in layers within the gaps and grooves of the filter frame
- A portion of the airflow path was nearly completely blocked
It was a classic filter clog, making it obvious that drying would be impossible under those conditions.
Even with a filter replaced under a recall, dirt accumulates after a few months of use.
In particular, the drying structure of front-loading machines tends to easily trap humidity and lint, causing accumulation.
Performance Restored After Cleaning
I thoroughly washed the filter with water and removed all accumulated dust.
I also vacuumed out the dust remaining inside before reassembling the unit.
The results were immediate.
- Drying times returned to their normal, shorter duration
- Dampness completely disappeared after the drying cycle ended
Indeed, the sole cause was a clogged drying filter.
It made me realize once again the importance of thoroughly cleaning the most crucial filter before suspecting complex malfunctions.
Conclusion — Filters Will Naturally Clog Even After Recall Replacement
What we learned from this incident is very simple.
- Even drying filters replaced via a recall will get dirty with normal use
- Dust that cannot be removed by external cleaning alone accumulates deep inside
- Longer drying times and damp laundry are almost always caused by a clogged filter
- Performance often improves easily through disassembly and cleaning
Anyone experiencing the following symptoms should suspect a filter clog as their top priority.
- Clothes are still damp when the drying cycle finishes

Front-loading washer-dryers are high-performance appliances, but filter maintenance is the key to their performance.
