Introducing “WP ALike”: A Plugin to Add YouTube-Style Admin Heart Badges to WordPress Comments
Following troubleshooting with reCAPTCHA v3 settings and form layouts, our blog’s comment section has successfully recovered, and we were even able to receive comments from readers right away on September 21.

To make it easier for visitors to leave reactions, we first implemented “WP ULike", one of the most established like plugins for WordPress.
WP ULike is an excellent plugin that allows you to add real-time, Ajax-powered “Like" buttons to post content and comments. While providing the convenience of letting unauthenticated general readers vote with a single click, it comes standard with multi-vote prevention (duplication limits) using cookies and IP addresses, allowing blogs that primarily operate in non-logged-in environments to collect reliable like counts.
The Concept of Two-Way Reactions to Express Gratitude from the Administrator to Readers
With WP ULike, the environment to receive reactions to comments from readers was now in place. However, as operation continued, a strong desire emerged: “I want the administrator to easily express gratitude to the readers who take the time to post comments.“
Even when time doesn’t permit writing lengthy replies to every single comment, a mechanism is needed to intuitively convey a message like “I read this" or “Thank you."
On the video streaming platform YouTube, when a channel administrator hearts a comment, the admin’s circular avatar icon is displayed alongside a small red heart mark. We wanted to introduce this visually intuitive administrator reaction into the WordPress comment section to liven up two-way communication between readers and administrators.
Inline Coexistence and Simplified Installation via ZIP Distribution
The goals for this feature addition were as follows:
- Natural UI Coexistence: Being able to sit naturally inline right next to the comments without conflicting with the previously installed general-reader plugin (WP ULike) buttons.
- Standardized Distribution and Installation: Rather than hardcoding it into theme configuration files or mu-plugins, setting up a ZIP distribution system via GitHub Releases so that it can be instantly installed on other sites via the admin “Upload Plugin" screen.
Functional Limitations of WP ULike and Obstacles Faced in Parallel Layout
In realizing this concept, functional gaps that could not be solved by existing WP ULike alone, as well as challenges regarding display and integration, came to light.
WP ULike Alone Cannot Achieve Admin Hearts
WP ULike is a plugin specialized in “aggregating and counting votes from an unspecified large number of readers." Therefore, it lacks features like YouTube’s capability where “the blog administrator picks out specific comments to grant a special heart, accompanied by the admin’s avatar image for differentiated display."
Development of the Complementary Plugin “WP ALike" and Automated GitHub Releases
To complement WP ULike’s functionality and realize administrator reactions, we developed a dedicated plugin called “WP ALike (Admin/Author Like)."
Coexistence with WP ULike and Resolution of Display Distortion
To make it sit neatly side-by-side with WP ULike buttons, both container elements were controlled using Flexbox (display: inline-flex) to achieve a natural inline layout. Furthermore, to address the issue where empty <p> tags were being inserted, the execution priority of the comment_text hook was adjusted to 40 to wait for processing by WP ULike and others, and all line break codes in the HTML output were completely stripped to thoroughly suppress false positives by wpautop. Dedicated CSS was also applied so that absolute positioning at the bottom right of the avatar icon is maintained even when emojis are replaced with images by WordPress core.
Realizing YouTube-Style Reactions and ZIP Installation from Releases
By introducing WP ALike, an “Admin Like" column was added to the WordPress comment management screen, allowing administrators to grant and remove hearts with a single click. Even if there are multiple administrators, each of their respective icons is output side-by-side.
On the front-end comment section as well, right alongside the WP ULike reader like button, the admin’s circular avatar icon and small red heart are displayed cleanly side-by-side without any layout breakage.
The plugin can be downloaded from the GitHub repository below.
The ZIP file for plugin installation can be downloaded directly from the Releases page. GitHub Releases (ZIP download):
Simply select the downloaded ZIP file from the WordPress admin screen via “Plugins" → “Add New Plugin" → “Upload Plugin," and you can instantly introduce YouTube-style admin hearts on any site.
Conclusion
To express gratitude for reader comments, I custom-built a plugin called “WP ALike" that awards YouTube-style administrator hearts. It complements the earlier implementation of “WP ULike" by resolving the lack of admin-oriented reaction features and achieves a beautiful side-by-side display for both. Along with publishing the source code on GitHub, a practical comment extension feature has been completed that allows for easy installation by downloading the ZIP from Releases.
